Tesla hasn’t had a profit since the company started almost four years ago, though Tesla’s chief executive Elon Musk said that he expects the Model S electric car to be profitable by 2013, just months after it goes into production.

At the Clean Tech Forum in San Francisco Musk said that the business was capable of delivering long term returns and pointed to its deals with Daimler’s Smart fortwo, Mercedes A-Class, and Toyota’s RAV4. Tesla is supplying battery packs and chargers for Daimler’s Smart fortwo, has a development program set up for the Mercedes A-Class, and is providing powertrains for Toyota’s RAV4. That added with a $30m investment from Panasonic and $226.1 million raised in an initial public offering.

“Our plate is full. We could do more deals but we’re trying to grow as fast as we can without being stupid,” he said. “When the Model S is in production, I am confident it will be profitable. I can’t figure out how to grow a company’s production by 30 times while remaining profitable. There may be people who can do that but I can’t.”

So far around 3,700 Model S cars have been ordered and Musk said Tesla plans to make 20,000 Model S cars annually. The first car will hit showrooms in 2012.

Last month, Tesla Motors saw its fourth-quarter net loss almost double from a year ago to $51.4 million, as research and production costs for the Model S grew.

Tesla lost $24.2 million a year earlier. On the flip side the company’s revenue almost doubled to $36.3 million from $18.6 million a year earlier.

Musk also added that electric companies didn’t have to worry about a grid overload because of EV charging. He said, “You would have to replace some 70 per cent of asphalt miles with EV before having to change the grid provided that the cars are charged at night. In terms of utility load we’re a long way from seeing electric cars having any kind of impact on the grid. Until we approach one per cent of EVs on the road, we shouldn’t spend much time thinking about the problem.”

Utility companies in California are already preparing for the onslaught of EVs by creating smart grids and pushing customers to charge at night.
