Nissan will test Leaf as part of New York City "Taxi of Tomorrow" deal for NV200
The new New York City “Taxi of Tomorrow” has been decided. The announcement that the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission has awarded Nissan a 10-year contract to make the new taxis – based on the NV200 – came out this week, with the additional information that the automaker and the city will jointly test “up to six” all-electric Leafs as taxi vehicles. Nissan will also provide the charging stations.
Nissan beat out both Ford and Turkish automaker Karsan Otomotive for the standard gas version of the new NYC taxi. Starting in late 2013, though, the taxi version of the NV200 will be the exclusive taxi of New York City. In 2009, Nissan released a sketch of an all-electric version of the NV200, which, with the Leaf tests, leads us to imagine a very similar – yet very different – taxi of tomorrow.
