General Motors Exec Calls Nissan LEAF A “Single Purpose Car”

"April proved to be a very productive and lucrative month for the Nissan LEAF. From being named the ’2011 World Car Of The Year’ to selling 573 units in the United States. So it was only a matter of time before someone decided to rain on their parade.
When asked his thoughts on the Nissan LEAF vehicle, General Motors North America President Mark Reuss threw a few jabs at the all-electric vehicle.
BizJournals quoted Reuss as saying: “(The Leaf) has a finite range and requires infrastructure and charging to run it, where the Volt is really an extended-range electric vehicle,” he said. “The Volt can really be the only car you own. You better be living within a certain range for the Leaf. … It’s a lot different market, a lot different car and a completely different driver.
“I’m not sure if I’d put the leaf in the hands of my three kids,” he said. “Say, what if they can’t charge it? What if they get to school and can’t charge it? The Leaf is a single-purpose car.”
If you look at Reuss’ comments from a technical standpoint, yes the Nissan LEAF vehicle is not for everyone. It’s a superb vehicle for those who tend to drive short distances. But on the other hand, just like with any new item that hits the market, the LEAF has time to change and evolve.
It can be also argued that the Nisan LEAF is a genuine all-electric vehicle while the Volt is just an upgraded plug-in hybrid, so comparing the two is like comparing Queen Elizabeth to Paris Hilton. What Reuss failed to mention was that most people don’t drive more than 100 miles a day and since the LEAF can go that distance, most people have no qualms with purchasing the vehicle."

ISUZU
