"Nissan has now closed their unique online reservation system for the Nissan LEAF Electric vehicle. At least it is closed it in the UK, other locations are yet to be confirmed. The system was the subject of much discussion when it launched, both for and against.
Those that supported it say that it was good way to stop dealers 'price gouging', or selling the car at prices inflated well over the manufacturer's recommendations, because of the limited availability of the new vehicle and the high demand from early adopters.
But the system was also the cause for much consternation and was disliked by some customers and dealers alike as it took control away from the dealership and put it into the hands of Nissan. That made it difficult to get orders processed quickly and seemed a little top heavy with even minor changes having to be approved by Nissan.
The message now being displayed on the reservation page encourages you to go to a dealer to reserve the LEAF.
Please contact your local dealer
Following the official launch of LEAF in the UK we have now closed the pre order website. Dealers now demonstrators available for test drive and our specialist Electric Vehicle Relationship Managers will be able to support you in ordering your Nissan LEAF.
We don't know what this means in terms of waiting times but it indicates there could be a chance of returning to the standard sales model after the early adopters have received their vehicles."
