"The nominees for the 2011 World Car of the Awards have officially been announced and the Nissan LEAF is listed among the 10 finalists.
This year’s list of finalists are extremely diverse. In alphabetically order, the finalists include: Audi A1 and A8, BMW 5-Series and X3, Jaguar XJ, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Nissan LEAF, Porsche Cayenne and the Volvo S60/V60. To some people’s surprise, the Chevy Volt (which has won a plethora of awards in the past few months) was not named as a finalist. However, statistics show that an American car has never won this award since it started being handed out in 2005 when the Audi A6 won.
The finalists were voted on by 66 international automotive journalists and was based on their personal experiences with each of the vehicles during professional evaluations. Journalists from all over the world- Asia, Europe, North and South America etc.- gave their insight on which vehicles should make the final 10 list. .
At the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March, the 10 finalists will be narrowed down to just three contenders. The official winner will be announced at the New York Auto Show in April.
The 2010 World Car of the Award went to the Volkswagen Polo."
